Rama rules Ayodhya for many years, establishing an ideal, just, and prosperous kingdom. Despite Sita having already passed the Agni Pariksha (trial by fire) in Lanka, rumors circulate among the citizens of Ayodhya doubting her purity after spending time in Ravana’s palace. To uphold the duty (dharma) of a king, who must be beyond reproach, a reluctant Rama banishes a pregnant Sita to the forest. Sita finds shelter in the ashram of the sage Valmiki. Sita gives birth to twin sons, Lava and Kusha, whom Valmiki raises and teaches the story of the Ramayana. Years later, Lava and Kusha recite the Ramayana in Rama's court. Recognizing them, Rama asks for a final test of purity. Sita, feeling betrayed and heartbroken, calls upon her mother, the Earth (Bhumi), to vindicate her. The Earth opens up, and Sita vanishes into it, leaving her mortal life behind.
